Since 2005, the New York house has dressed a woman who asks no one for permission. Black, clean shoulders, an urban wardrobe worn like a second skin.
The gesture never changes: take an everyday piece, the shirt, the jeans, the blazer, then rebuild it until it becomes a fashion object.
The selection is now at Le Shop 17, a few steps from the Croisette, in Cannes.
The story begins in New York. Alexander Wang launched his label in 2005, after two years at Parsons School of Design. The first collection came down to a handful of unisex knitwear silhouettes, almost a manifesto: few pieces, plenty of intent. In 2007, the house presented its first full women's ready-to-wear collection on the New York runway.
Recognition followed quickly. In 2008, the designer won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and signed his first handbag collection. In 2009 came the Swarovski Womenswear Designer of the Year award at the CFDA Fashion Awards, along with footwear and the T by Alexander Wang line. In 2011, the house opened its first boutique in SoHo, New York, and received the CFDA award for best accessory designer.
The vocabulary itself has never moved. The house claims an aesthetic of the undone, that tension between refinement and the imperfect, and that very New York idea of an everyday uniform raised to the rank of designer piece. Black dominates, the cut is direct, leather and visible topstitching stand in for ornament. The house itself speaks of a fusion between luxury and streetwear, of an assumed urban modernity, today carried from New York to Los Angeles and Tokyo.
