New collection
Danamé
She launched her label at fifty, after a life as a model and a spell in homeopathy. It is not a conventional designer's path, and that is precisely what makes this one interesting.
Danamé was founded in Paris in 2016 by Dana Stinea-Messika. Born in Romania, the daughter of a seamstress, she arrived in Paris at nineteen and built an international career as a model.
Her very first collection, in spring 2017, came down to fifteen silk tops embroidered by hand. The inspiration came from two precise places: the Romanian blouses of her childhood, and the embroidery she discovered on her travels in India.
“I was born in Romania and I have always been fascinated by embroidery work, the blouses I have worn since childhood, and the hand embroidery I discovered during my travels in India,” she says. The label starts, then, from a very concrete gesture rather than a marketing concept.
She sums up the positioning in a single phrase: wearable jewellery. Gold chains laid over silk, satins that catch the light, finishes treated like fine jewellery. The house's “Red Carpet” line makes it clear enough what occasions these pieces are meant for.
Her collections always begin with a precise image: a sculpture in Positano of the fisherman's wife, a symbol of feminine resilience. Japanese kintsugi, the art of mending broken ceramics with gold. Or the rainbow eucalyptus, for a palette of emerald, purple and iridescent blue.
Her philosophy fits into a single sentence: “Fashion is meant to serve me, I am not meant to serve fashion.” And another, on her method: “I draw more on my inner world than on what I see outside.”
Today the label is stocked in some twenty countries. In France it is carried by only four boutiques, and Le Shop 17 is one of them, the only one in Cannes.
