Mackage
Some labels make coats among many other things. And then there is one that has made nothing else since 1999, turning the coat into an absolute speciality.
Mackage was born in Montreal, which is no small detail: when you design a coat in a city where winter is a genuine ordeal, you do not cut corners on performance.
Founder Eran Elfassy came to it through leather, his family trade. Elisa Dahan, whom he has known since primary school, joined him in 2001 as creative director.
The very first piece already summed up the whole project: a fitted, double-breasted coat that married leather and wool. Twenty-five years on, the house has not changed its territory. It has simply gone deeper into it, to the point of trademarking a formula that says exactly what it sells: “Aesthetics that Protect”.
Eran Elfassy puts it this way: “We are a functional brand guided by fashion.” And he draws the line immediately after: “We would never sacrifice the demands of performance for the sake of style.” That sentence is what sets Mackage apart from an ordinary designer coat.
What is really inside a Mackage coat
The house is precise about its materials, and the claims can be checked. The down has been RDS certified, to the Responsible Down Standard, since 2019: ethically sourced, traceable and audited by an independent body. The leathers come from tanneries rated Gold Medal by the Leather Working Group, the highest level there is. Recycled materials are verified to the Global Recycled Standard.
Certain models are rated down to -20 °C with very high fill power down. And the house backs its outerwear with a guarantee against manufacturing defects for the useful lifetime of the product, along with a repair service. That is not a sales pitch, it is a position on durability: a coat you can repair is a coat you keep.
The detail that identifies the brand at a glance is the collar. The house calls it, quite literally, the “Signature Collar” on its product pages. Once you have spotted it, you can recognise a Mackage from thirty metres away.

Choosing your coat well
A coat is judged on three things, none of which shows in a photograph: its real weight once it is on your shoulders, the way the collar sits around the neck, and the ease at the armholes when you wear a jumper underneath. Down always looks bulkier in the window than it does on the body, and double-face wool always looks stiffer than it truly is.
