SARA ROCA
A man's shirt, borrowed, softened, turned into a dress for the whole season. That is the signature of a Milanese house that made the buttoned collar its playground.
Cotton poplin, silk twill, sunray pleats, jewelled belts: every piece is made in Italy, with the prints produced in Como, the historic home of silk.
At Le Shop 17, the selection plays the Riviera card: sunlit prints, ankle lengths, an easy line from lunch to dinner.
Sara Roca grew up on Vancouver's North Shore, in Canada, where she developed an early love of clothes watching her mother sew. After studying at Kwantlen College and then at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, she continued her training at Polimoda in Florence and completed internships in the great Italian houses, notably at Valentino and at Ruffo.
In 2010, based in Milan, she launched her eponymous line with a capsule of fifteen white shirts. That starting point became the code of the house: the classic men's shirt, reinterpreted for women. The Elena dress, a shirt-collar dress with a full A-line skirt, established itself as the brand's best-seller and sums up the proposition, a masculine cut set against a refined femininity.
The wardrobe then widened to eveningwear, knitwear, outerwear and blouses. The materials remain the same obsessions: cotton pique, poplin, silk twill, organza. Production is entirely Italian and the prints are made in Como. Today most of the house's sales are made outside Italy, in the independent fashion boutiques that champion this wardrobe of instantly recognisable dresses.
