What if the finest piece in your wardrobe were the one nobody was meant to see? Vannina Vesperini built an entire house on that question, under a name that became a signature: the Dessous-Dessus.
Silk, lace, a cut that stands up on its own. A camisole worn under a suit in the morning and over a pair of jeans at night, without ever looking like a costume.
This is lingerie that has decided to step out. Le Shop 17 now presents it in Cannes.
Vannina Vesperini learned to sew as a child, alongside her grandmother. After studying Oriental languages, she turned to fashion and graduated from ESMOD in Paris in 1993. Three years later, in 1996, a buyer from the Japanese department store Takashimaya spotted her at a show in New York: those were her first international orders. Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman followed.
Recognition came quickly. In 1999 she was named designer of the year by the Salon International de la Lingerie. In 2000 she opened her first own boutique in Paris. In 2004 Paris Capitale de la Création named her designer of the year in turn. In 2009 she launched the Soie Pacifique line, in organic silk. Today the house reaches from Paris to Shanghai.
The Dessous-Dessus
The concept rests on a play on words and on a great deal of technique: wearing lingerie as clothing. That calls for finishing that holds up in full daylight, straps that stay put, a silk dense enough not to betray, and lace placed where it gives structure as much as decoration.
The signature piece of the house, the Caraco l'Original, is a copyright-protected design. The silk is cut away beneath the lace, following its wave pattern, so that transparency appears exactly where it should. A V neckline, a back outlined in lace, two side slits with lace trim: it works over trousers, a pencil skirt or a pair of jeans just as well as under a tailored jacket.
