Dinner Attire on a Yacht

Dinner on board, just a short distance from the Vieux Port, follows its own rules. Neither beach wear nor a stiff evening gown truly works: what is needed is an elegance that can hold its own, literally, when the deck shifts a little and the breeze joins the table.

At Le Shop 17, we are often asked this question as the regatta season and private evenings offshore approach: what should you wear for a dinner on a yacht? The answer comes down to three words: comfort, fluidity, balance. Here is how to put together an outfit that carries you through cocktails on deck, a seated dinner, and a nighttime stroll without a single misstep.

The Deck Sets Its Own Rules

A yacht is not a restaurant. The floor is never perfectly stable, the gangways are narrow, you walk almost barefoot on the teak, and the offshore wind never gives warning before it picks up. The ideal outfit must therefore work with three concrete constraints.

  • Walking and balance. Between the dock, the gangway, and the deck, you are constantly moving. A silhouette that is too restrictive or unstable shoes quickly become a problem.
  • The wind. Even on a calm evening in Cannes, the sea air moves. Fabrics that are too light and lift at the slightest breeze work against your look just as much as they get in the way at the table.
  • Salt and humidity. Fabrics that wrinkle on first contact or show marks from humidity lose their shape within an hour. It is best to choose fabrics that still fall well even after several hours on board.

The Fabrics That Win on Board

The golden rule remains fluidity: light crepe, ramie, matte silk, viscose, micromodal jersey. These fabrics fall gracefully, do not show creases, and follow the body's movement without ever looking wrinkled, even after the tender ride out to the boat.

Flowing Dresses and Shirt Dresses

A fluid dress, belted or cut like a shirt dress, remains the safest choice: it looks put-together without being restrictive, and works just as well standing for drinks on deck as seated for dinner.

Fluid High-Waisted Trousers

For those who prefer to avoid skirts caught by the wind, wide-leg trousers in a stretch or scuba fabric offer the same relaxed elegance, with the added benefit of freedom of movement.

Light, Layerable Tops

A top in a fine natural fiber slips easily under a light jacket or cardigan, ready for the cooler air offshore once night falls.

To avoid: thin, high heels, which catch in the deck gratings and seams, as well as stiff or heavily pleated fabrics that hold the mark of sitting for a long time. On a yacht, always favor a flat or wedge sole that is flexible, and fabrics that forgive.

Putting Together Your Look for the Evening

For a seated dinner on board, choose a fluid dress or the pairing of a loose shirt and wide-leg trousers, a compact clutch rather than a large bag, and a light shawl or thin cardigan slipped over the shoulders for the trip back, once the sun has set over the Bay of Cannes. As for shoes, flat sandals or a mule with a small wedge heel remain the safest allies on a yacht's deck.

One Accessory, Two Uses

A soft clutch fits easily in hand during drinks and sits neatly on the table during dinner. Avoid rigid or overly bulky bags, which are impractical in the tight spaces of a boat.
