Capsule suitcase

The Cruise Wardrobe

A morning port of call in Portofino, dinner at the captain's table in the evening, lazing on deck in the afternoon: a Mediterranean cruise calls for more outfit changes in a single day than a full week on land.

Yet there is no need to pack two suitcases. Here is how Le Shop 17 puts together a capsule wardrobe that covers both registers, from bikini cover-up to gala dinner, with a handful of pieces that are truly versatile.

The principle: one capsule, two registers

A successful cruise wardrobe rests on a small number of pieces that combine with one another. The idea is not to multiply outfits, but to choose fluid fabrics (silk, ramie, crepe, fine jersey) that travel without creasing and move from the deck to the ship's gourmet restaurant simply by changing accessories. A dress worn barefoot with a large bag by day becomes an evening look with a clutch and a scarf tied a different way.

Lazy days: ports of call and the upper deck

For mornings ashore and afternoons by the ship's pool, choose loose, printed, breathable pieces. A ramie shirt dress can be worn on its own or open over a swimsuit, and a large soft bag holds a towel, sunscreen and a spare pair of sandals without ever looking out of place on the quays of Portofino or Capri.

Captain's dinners and evenings ashore

On most lines, captain's dinner night remains the cruise's one dress-up occasion. A fluid crepe dress, belted at the waist, packs easily into a suitcase and is elevated with a structured clutch and a silk scarf tied around the wrist or worn as a headband. It is these two or three accessories, more than a new outfit, that carry a look from day to evening.

The cross-register essentials

Certain pieces earn their place in the suitcase precisely because they are not confined to either register. Fluid printed silk trousers work with flat sandals on an excursion and with heels at the ship's restaurant. A kimono-sleeve top slips under a light jacket for evenings when the air turns cool on deck, and stands on its own the moment the sun returns.

How to pack your capsule suitcase

Three fluid dresses are enough for ten days: a printed one for daytime, a plain one for dinner, and a dressier one for an evening ashore. A pair of trousers and a top recombine with each dress and spare you from packing a separate outfit for every day. Just two bags are enough, a large soft one for the day and a structured clutch for the evening, complemented by one or two silk scarves that transform the look of the same dress without taking up any space. Finally, favour fabrics that do not crease, jersey, crepe or ramie, to arrive looking put-together at every port of call, suitcase barely unpacked.
