Le Shop 17 guide
What to wear to the casino, from Cannes to Monte-Carlo
An evening at the Casino Barrière in Cannes doesn't call for the same outfit as entry into the private salons of the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Here's how to read each dress code, and stay elegant without ever being too flashy.
Less than thirty minutes apart, the Casino Barrière in Cannes and the Casino de Monte-Carlo don't apply the same rules. The first stays fairly relaxed on weekdays, while the second requires a jacket in its private salons from nightfall on. Between the two, one constant holds: discretion always pays off more than seeking an effect.
Cannes: a dress code that relaxes in the evening
The Casino Barrière in Cannes, on the Croisette, welcomes daytime guests in proper, casual attire: a simple dress, smart trousers, or a suit are more than enough for the slot machines and the tables in the main room. Shorts, swimwear, and flip-flops, however, remain off-limits, even in the height of summer.
In the evening, the atmosphere tightens slightly without becoming formal. A short or midi cocktail dress, a fabric with a bit of structure, and closed-toe shoes or dressy sandals work everywhere. This is the most comfortable register for a first casino outing, without the constraints of the Monegasque salons.
Monte-Carlo: the jacket becomes a rule, not an option
The Casino de Monte-Carlo clearly separates two spaces. In the Salle Europe, open in the afternoon, neat, casual attire is still accepted. But from 7pm on, and throughout the private salons (the Salon Rose, the reserved gaming rooms), a jacket is required for men all year round, and women are expected to wear an equivalent evening outfit: a dress, a structured blazer, or a dressy ensemble.
In practice, this means a fully casual look, even an elegant one in absolute terms, can be turned away at the entrance to a private salon after sunset. The jacket or blazer isn't an added style flourish: it's the piece that determines whether you get in.
Accessories: the luxury that goes unnoticed
In a gaming salon, the attention should stay on the table, not on you. A compact bag rather than a tote, a plain gold piece of jewelry rather than a statement piece: the unspoken rule at the tables of Monte-Carlo, as in Cannes, is the same. A fine material is enough to convey elegance, with no need for a logo or an eye-catching volume.

The rule that applies to both rooms
Whether in Cannes or Monte-Carlo, it's best to check the exact code before you go: certain themed evenings temporarily change the rules, and the Monegasque private salons can be stricter during a gala weekend. A quick call to the reception desk of the casino you're visiting avoids any unpleasant surprise at the door.
Fundamentally, the same logic applies everywhere on the Riviera: a quality piece, a clean cut, an understated color. The outfit should never compete with the gaming table or the room itself, it should simply rise to meet it.
