Designer evening dresses in Cannes

A gala on the Croisette, dinner at the Palm Beach, a wedding in the hills or New Year's Eve facing the bay: in Cannes, there is never a shortage of occasions for an evening dress.

Finding the right one is another matter. A designer dress is chosen for its cut, its fabric and the way it moves, not just for how it looks in a photo.

This guide covers the main families of evening dresses and the houses to try on at Le Shop 17, rue Notre-Dame, just off rue d'Antibes.

Gown, cocktail or sequins: where to start

The invitation comes first. Black tie or gala dress codes call for a floor-length gown; a cocktail party, a gallery opening or dinner on a terrace suit a knee or midi length cocktail dress better. In between, an elegant jumpsuit or a skirt and bodice set offer a refined alternative, often more comfortable for a long night.

Then come fabric and light. Crepe and satin draw a fluid silhouette that works in every season; sequins and lamé catch the light and need nothing else; lace and embroidery add texture without overdoing it. On the French Riviera, where evenings often start outdoors, a stole or a short jacket completes the look when the breeze picks up.

The houses to try on at Le Shop 17

Stéphane Rolland, evening couture

Crepe satin gowns, crystal embroidered necklines, kimono or batwing sleeves: Stéphane Rolland's pieces are made for grand evenings. The couturier was an official partner of the Cannes Film Festival for five years. Everything about his dresses is in our guide Stéphane Rolland in Cannes.

Meraki, the mirror sequin

An Australian eveningwear house founded in Perth, Meraki works with mirror sequins, boned bodices and sculpted volumes, all the way to the Nicole ball gown. The Meraki story.

Dice Kayek, the architecture of clothing

Founded in Paris in 1992 by sisters Ece and Ayşe Ege, Dice Kayek builds its pieces like architecture, between sharp tailoring and hand embroidery. Ideal for those who prefer an embroidered jacket to a dress. Discover Dice Kayek.

Rabanne, Sara Roka and Ermanno Firenze

The metal and lamé of Rabanne, the long Maria Sole dress by Milan house Sara Roka, the lace and beaded embroidery of Ermanno Firenze: three very different ways to dress for an evening, all to try on in store.

Fitting room tips

Try an evening dress on with the shoes you plan to wear, or at least the right heel height: the length of a gown is judged to within a few centimetres. Sit down, raise your arms, walk a few steps: a dress that works standing but rides up when seated will spoil the evening. Sizes also vary from one house to another, between Italian, French and international sizing; our size guide helps you find your way.

For big occasions, the Le Shop 17 team offers a personal shopping appointment: several dresses prepared in advance, alterations planned ahead and advice on accessories, from the evening bag to the hat for a daytime wedding.

A dress for every Riviera evening

Every occasion has its codes. Our guides cover the most common ones: the cocktail dress for a gala in Monaco, the wedding guest outfit on the French Riviera, the New Year's Eve outfit in Cannes, the white party and the casino, from Cannes to Monte Carlo.
