Where to buy a hat in Cannes
On the French Riviera, a hat is no detail. It protects from the sun in summer, completes a wedding outfit and warms up a winter look on the Croisette.
Straw, felt, capeline or beret: each shape has its season and its occasion.
Here is how to choose, and where to try on Maison Michel hats in Cannes.
Choosing a hat by season
In spring and summer
Straw takes over as soon as the sun comes out: a wide-brimmed capeline for the beach and lunches on a terrace, a straw panama or fedora for a sharper look in town. A brim of at least 7 cm truly shades the face.
In autumn and winter
Felt takes over: a fedora in wool or rabbit felt, a beret, a cloche. It goes with a camel coat or a tailored jacket and instantly adds style to a simple outfit.
For a wedding or ceremony
An elegant capeline, a fascinator or a veiled hat, matched to the dress without competing with it. Complete outfit ideas are in our guide to the wedding guest outfit on the French Riviera.
Maison Michel, the Parisian milliner at Le Shop 17
Founded in Paris in 1936, Maison Michel handcrafts hats worn on Chanel runways as well as found on the shelves of Le Shop 17. You'll find the house's signature models, Virginie, Blanche and André, along with capelines and veils, in straw or felt depending on the season. The full story is in Maison Michel in Cannes, the workshop that also makes Chanel's hats, and the current season in the new autumn-winter 2026 collection.

Finding the right size
A hat is chosen by head circumference, measured horizontally about a finger's width above the eyebrows and ears. A hat that is too big flies off at the first gust of mistral; one that is too small marks the forehead. Trying on remains best: in store, the team helps find the size and shape that suit your face.
