48 HOURS IN CANNES, BETWEEN SHOPPING AND THE BEACH

Two days are enough to take the pulse of Cannes: the shop windows of rue d'Antibes, the light on the Croisette, an afternoon with your feet in the sand, then the lanes of Le Suquet and the stalls of the Forville market.

Here is our itinerary, designed to alternate shopping, lazing about and fine dining, without ever feeling rushed.

Day 1: shopping and lazing about

The morning naturally begins on rue d'Antibes, the shopping street that runs through the city from east to west. Here you'll find both major names and more discreet boutiques, and it's the best place to take the temperature of Cannes style before wandering further south, toward the sea.

From there you reach the Croisette, where the pace changes: the windows of luxury houses line up facing the bay, between the Palais des Festivals and the harbour. It's time for a stop at Le Shop 17, at 15 rue Notre-Dame, just a stone's throw away. The boutique brings together a sharp multi-brand selection, flowing dresses, silk pieces and handcrafted accessories, ideal for completing a holiday suitcase or finding an evening outfit in a single fitting. Here you'll find, among other things, the hand-painted cashmere knits from the Italian house Avant Toi, or the hand-woven raffia bags from the Madagascan house IBELIV.

For lunch, head to a terrace near the beach or a more discreet address in the small streets behind the Palais: grilled fish, salade niçoise or fresh pasta, with a view of the Lérins Islands for the luckiest tables.

The afternoon is spent on the sand. Public beaches or private beaches with sun loungers and service, Cannes offers both options within just a few hundred metres of each other. Stay until sunset, when the golden light glides over the bay and the Croisette comes alive for the evening apéritif.

Day 2: Le Suquet and the Forville market

The second day begins up high, in the Le Suquet neighbourhood. This old hilltop village, with its cobbled lanes and coloured facades, is the oldest part of Cannes. Climb up gently to the Mont-Chevalier tower and the Notre-Dame-d'Espérance church, for a sweeping view over the harbour, the bay and, on a clear day, the peaks of the Esterel.

On the way back down, a stop at the Forville market is a must, one of the finest covered markets on the Côte d'Azur. Local fruit and vegetables, morning's catch, flowers, cheeses and small stalls of Niçois specialities: this is where the people of Cannes themselves do their shopping, far from the bustle of the Croisette.

The rest of the day lends itself to another, more relaxed shopping stroll, through the streets surrounding Le Suquet and the Vieux Port, before dinner facing the sea to close out the stay. A table on the harbour, a well-chilled rosé and the view of the moored yachts make for a final image of Cannes that's easy to take home.

To extend the experience, our guide to shopping in Cannes details the best addresses on rue d'Antibes and the Croisette, and all of our city guides will help you put together a tailored stay, between fashion, gastronomy and the Riviera art of living.
