What to Wear at the Cannes Film Festival

In May 2027, Cannes will once again come alive with the Film Festival. Red carpet, private parties, days on the Croisette: three moments, three dress codes. Here is how to dress for each one.

The Cannes Film Festival will take place in May 2027. The exact dates have not yet been announced: they will be confirmed by the organizers in the coming months. That leaves time to prepare a wardrobe that meets the very different demands of each highlight of the Festival, because dressing for Cannes is not just a matter of choosing a single dress.

Three moments, three codes

The red carpet follows a strict protocol, with almost no room for interpretation. Evening parties and cocktails allow far more freedom, in both fabric and cut. The day on the Croisette, finally, calls for an entirely different register: relaxed, but always polished. Confusing these three registers is the most common mistake; telling them apart is already half the work.

The red carpet

Here, protocol leaves no room for improvisation. For women, the long gown remains the reference: it should fall to the floor and move with every step with ease, whether sculptural, embroidered with crystal or built like an architecture of fabric. For men, the black tuxedo remains the safe choice. In both cases, fabric and cut matter more than piling on detail.

Evening parties and cocktails

Once the red carpet is behind you, private parties and cocktails follow much more relaxed rules. This is the moment to bring out fabrics that catch the light, sequins, satin, feathers, and to play with shorter or more structured cuts. The cocktail dress allows for more personality, and a bolero or an elaborate bag complete the outfit as night falls.

During this part of the day, the accessory rounds off the silhouette: a structured clutch finishes the outfit without ever weighing it down.

The day on the Croisette

Between screenings, the day on the Croisette calls for a different look: less dressed up, but just as polished. Choose simple, well-cut pieces, a statement pair of sunglasses, a structured or natural-fabric day bag, and a belt that shapes the silhouette over a fluid outfit. This is where accessories make all the difference between an ordinary outfit and a look that gets noticed.

One wardrobe, three highlights

The goal is not to multiply outfits, but to think of your selection as a coherent whole: a long gown for the red carpet, one or two shorter, freer pieces for evening parties, accessories that carry the look into the day. A few well-chosen pieces are often enough to cover the entire Festival, provided you try them on in advance and adjust sizes before the big dates.
